This class runs from 6.30pm-9pm once a week from the start date for 10 consecutive weeks. Please note: we don't close for bank holidays.
This 10 week evening course is perfect for anyone who has taken a Beginner’s/Intermediate Silver Class along with the Soldering Masterclass or equivalent and would like to develop their skills and work on a wider range of stone setting techniques.
During the course you will learn several different stone setting techniques which include; Cabochon(rub over), tube, gypsy(flush), Collet, Irregular shapes, grain and channel setting.
The Tutor will also be talking about the qualities of different stones and considerations when setting them.
This evening course is very intensive so come prepared but it will really move your work on in leaps and bounds and promises not to disappoint. All the materials including stones and silver will be provided.
Weeks 1 & 2 - Creating a simple cabochon (rub over) setting, which involves creating a bezel and encasing a cabochon-shaped stone. This is a key technique for setting stones and is very useful to add to your repertoire of skills as it allows you to set a range of natural stones in a range of sizes.
Week 3 - Tube setting. This is a simple yet effective technique for neatly setting usually small stones into silver tube. It's a great contrast to the rub over setting and adds a new dimension to your jewellery.
Week 4 - Gypsy (flush) setting . Flush setting is a neat way of setting your stones into the metal, which allows a flat finish to the piece so that your stone is well protected.
Week 5 - Irregular shaped settings. This class will focus on creating settings for unusual or irregular shaped stones. Perfect for things like sea glass or free form stones.
Week 6 - Collet setting. You will measure and build a collet from sheet silver and learn to correctly set your stone in the collet.
Weeks 7&8 - Grain setting. Learn to set small faceted stones into metal using the ‘Grain’ setting technique.
Weeks 9&10 - Channel setting. You will learn how to build a channel setting for your stones and set a row of faceted stones.
