Advanced Jewellery Diploma (3 Weeks)
Advanced Diploma in Creative Jewellery
Book now for our January intake
This is our higher-level, advanced follow-on course from the 1-year or 7 week intensive Diploma in Creative Jewellery. It is a two week intense, technique-based course, that focuses primarily on developing more advanced bench-skills in silver work and related materials. At the end of the two week training, students take a 5-day placement (which we offer support in finding) in a jewellery related environment. This could be either shadowing a jeweller, working in a jewellery shop or gallery or any other placement offering experience that is relevant to your jewellery aspirations.
This course is suitable for students who have completed the Diploma in Creative Jewellery with us but can also be taken by those with a similar skill level to our Diploma graduates, who are looking to advance their bench and jewellery design skills. All previous Diploma students are asked to carry out a short phone interview before booking and non-diploma students are asked to attend an interview at the school, with samples of their work, to ensure suitability for the course.

Advanced Jewellery Design
This day will be spent advancing your design practice and preparing design work for Advanced Wax Carving and Mixed Media. The morning will be spent looking at how you can improve on your design work before covering the outline of what will be in advanced wax carving and the mixed media workshops. You will be encouraged to look at books, magazines and online searches to find inspiration and by the end of the day you will have a fairly clear idea of what you will be making in both classes allowing the focus to be on completing them in the sessions.
Learn how to 'cold connect' jewellery components together without the use of solder. You will be guided through the techniques of hinge making, riveting and tab making to broaden your skill set and give you an opportunity to introduce such materials as plastic, wood, stone, shell and fabric in to your work.
Advanced Wax Carving (2 Day Class)
In this class you will learn how to carve more complex forms when creating your pieces and how to keep your carving accurate with the extended use of technical drawings, layout lines and measuring tools. We will also use gravers and scorpers to carve intricate mounts or collets for stones.
Mixed Media Jewellery (2 Day Class)
Following on from the Advanced Design Class, you will be putting your design into practice by working with Resin, Perspex and Wood over two days combined with silver, brass or copper.
Intermediate Stone Setting (2 Day Class)
In this 2 day class you will learn how to do a Four Claw Setting and a Channel Setting. Techniques covered include multiple solder joints and building a handmade claw for a faceted stone.
Invented by goldsmith Charles Lewton-Brain in the late 1980s, this technique involves repeatedly annealing, folding and hammering sheet metal to produce unique, organic and strong three dimensional shapes.
Recycling Silver and Jewellery Repairs
AM - During the morning you will be introduced into melting and reworking scrap metal to create new pieces. You will be able to melt down your scrap metal (you can bring in your own scarp metal should you wish) and through the use of forging and forming techniques, rework it into useable sheet and wire for future use.
PM - You are gaining the jewellery skills to carry out repairs during the diploma, so in the afternoon you will learn how to assess a repair, and some key things to look out for when accepting a repair request.
Please note that whist every effort is made by LJS to support you in finding a placement, we cannot guarantee one and it is ultimately the students responsibility to secure a relevant 5-day (or longer) role. LJS communicate with placement providers to offer valuable feedback to students in order to get the most out of the experience.
The course can be taken without the placement element (if students wish to do so) but, in order to gain the Advanced Diploma certificate, placements must be completed.
What is included:
10 full days of advanced jewellery bench-based training, 5 days supported placement and all materials for the classes, subject to class allowance, marking session with your tutor and advanced diploma certificate on successful completion.
