Zoe Harding - Jewellery Tutor
Jewellery Design, Technical Drawing, Beginners Silver, Intermediate Silver, Stone Setting.
Previous Qualifications & Training:
I studied for a BA (Hons) degree in Metalwork & Jewellery, graduating in 2003, followed by numerous practical courses with industry experts covering everything from Wax Carving to Platinum, Stone Setting, Diamond Grading and 3D CAD...plus lots of practice.
How I got involved in making jewellery:
I had some incredibly inspiring art tutors whilst studying for my A-levels. They encouraged me to experiment and do whatever I wanted, not just what was expected. I made large catwalk jewellery pieces out of my mothers aluminium baking trays. I really loved this time. It also meant that I was able to get a place straight on to a degree course rather than studying a foundation course first. I already knew what I wanted to do.
Things I have done:
I set up my workshop and business soon after graduation. To pay for tools and materials I worked in a high-end jewellers part-time which was great to understand the industry from both sides. I then spent four years working as a jewellery designer for Vivienne Westwood at their London headquarters. Since then my personal work has been sold in several stores from Wolf & Badger to Fortnum & Mason, been exhibited in galleries and featured in numerous magazines as well as receiving a number of high profile industry awards.
Things I do now:
I run my own bespoke fine jewellery label under my own name whilst providing creative and technical design services to major brands worldwide. I also run classes at the London Jewellery School!
My biggest achievement so far:
Meeting the Queen as a result of my running my jewellery business was a pretty great moment and I have been very fortunate to be given such an opportunity. Running your own business can introduce you to fascinating people and take you to places you may never have otherwise; I am proud to have turned my passion into a career.
Things I hope to achieve in the Future:
Too many to mention…I’m working on it so watch this space!
Three words that describe me are:
Determined. Ambitious. Creative.
I am inspired by:
For me inspiration can come from anywhere and anything if you remember to keep your eyes open and consider how something could be translated and reworked into wearable jewellery. What you see could influence a pattern, a form or even a technique.
My Favourite Jeweller is:
My favorites are forever changing however I’m really interested in the new work coming from the major fine jewellery houses, from Chanel to David Morris. For refined design and technical ingenuity Bogh-Art are pioneers. With a very different but distinctive style, Wallace Chan creates gem-encrusted artworks which are truly fascinating.
