You don’t need a degree to run a successful jewellery business
The A-level results are out today and for those picking up your envelope, we really hope you got the results you wanted. Whether you are just getting your results, have completed a Foundation course or are thinking of retraining we wanted to let you know that you don’t need a jewellery degree to learn how to design and make jewellery or to have a successful business. Degrees are an even bigger financial and time commitment than in past years so deciding whether to take a place on a course has big consequences on your progress as well as your bank balance!
Jessica Rose, award-winning entrepreneur and founder of the London Jewellery School, does not have a degree. Jess started out studying for a degree in Arts Management at Southbank University in London but decided to leave after a year when she felt she just wanted to get out there and start her own business. Her ambition was to become a jewellery designer and she attended making classes to help her achieve that goal. She went on to set up her own successful jewellery business but also identified a gap in the market for jewellery making classes so she started to teach part-time alongside her business. The London Jewellery School was born and grew quickly and Jess has since won four business awards. Overall, Jessica’s businesses have made over £7 million in sales.
The courses that she took at the beginning of her journey helped her launch her own jewellery business and helped shape the idea for the Diploma courses we run now at the London Jewellery School and these are perfect for anyone who would like to train as a jeweller. We still have a few places left on the courses that start this September.
The benefits of a Diploma over a degree are
- Study one day a week (weekend options available) which means you can fit it in around work or other commitments
- Focus on making skills but also cover design skills (and the Diploma in Creative Jewellery covers business skills too)
- Lower cost than a degree
- Payment plan available
- Most materials included
- Small group (maximum of 7)
- Expert tutors and individual support and mentoring
We have two Diploma courses, both suitable for beginners.
The Diploma in Creative Jewellery is a great course to choose if you would like to learn traditional silversmithing skills along with other media including resin, perspex, beading and metal clay.
Taught 1 day per week – choose from Wednesday or Sunday
The Diploma in Silver Jewellery is for those who know they would like to focus on the traditional silversmithing methods.
Taught one day per week on Saturdays
There are now many routes in to starting your own jewellery business or working for an established jeweller without doing a three-year degree.
