Make some truly unique pieces by learning the art of water casting!
Water casting is achieved by pouring molten metal into cold water where it immediately solidifies into a random shape.
It can be used to great effect to create otherworldly forms and irregular shapes with interesting textures that are quite unlike the shapes you are likely to create by traditional hand fabrication (from sheet or wire, etc). It is a great way to use your scrap silver and turn it into something beautiful and unique.
To experiment with water casting and create jewellery from the pieces you make it is better for you to already have some experience in silver jewellery making and are competent with soldering and using hand tools found at the bench.
The tutor will encourage you to use your skill and imagination to turn these pieces into stunning pieces of jewellery.
During the class, you will learn about how best to melt your metal and pour it safely and have the opportunity to experiment with different pours.
Once you have some cast pieces, the tutor will guide you through drilling, soldering and finishing techniques to help you create unique pieces of jewellery.
General Info:
For this class you will need to bring your own scrap silver to recycle. You will need to be at an intermediate level in terms of silver jewellery experience having completed beginners silver jewellery and the Soldering masterclass or equivalent level of study as you will be working with large Butane torches and will then be using the cast pieces to turn them into wearable jewellery.
As with all our classes, for health and safety reasons you need to wear closed toed shoes.
There will be plenty of tea, coffee and luxury biscuits! The classes are all run by expert tutors with years of professional experience who are friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. The size of the classes is kept small to allow plenty of one-on-one attention and the maximum number of students for this class is 8.
We take an hour break for lunch and there are plenty of local shops to get food from, or you can always bring a packed lunch to eat in the studio. If you have any questions regarding this or other courses please don't hesitate to get in touch.
